Minecraft has arrived on Nintendo Switch 2, but the best part of the launch is easy to miss. Players who already bought the digital Switch version can claim the new Standard Edition without paying for the game again in most regions. The free-upgrade offer has a deadline, and it does not apply to every kind of purchase.
Mojang released the dedicated Switch 2 edition on October 27, 2026, with Vibrant Visuals turned on by default. It also brings back the Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up with updated graphics. If you are deciding whether to upgrade, there are a few things worth checking first.
Is the Minecraft Switch 2 upgrade free?
Yes, for eligible digital owners in most regions. Mojang’s free Standard Edition upgrade offer runs from October 27, 2026 at 9 AM Pacific to January 31, 2027 at 9 AM Pacific. It is redeemed through Nintendo eShop, not a third-party code seller.
Japan, Taiwan and Thailand are exceptions, with small local upgrade charges listed by Mojang. India is not listed among those exceptions, but your actual entitlement still depends on the region and purchase history of your Nintendo Account. Check the eShop price before confirming the transaction.
Physical cartridge owners do not get the same general free Standard Edition entitlement from the announcement. Instead, opening the older Minecraft Switch version on a Switch 2 during the offer period presents an option for a discounted digital Ultimate Collection. Digital owners can also choose discounted higher-tier editions.
What you get: Vibrant Visuals, not a different Minecraft
The Switch 2 edition is still Minecraft Bedrock. You can build, explore, fight mobs and visit your existing worlds. The major change is how those worlds look: sunlight, shadows, fog and reflections are upgraded through Vibrant Visuals.
It is a cosmetic rendering change rather than a new survival mode or extra biome. The feature does not apply in every situation. Mojang specifically excludes split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds or content from the enhanced visual mode.

Standard, Deluxe or Ultimate: which edition should you buy?
Standard contains the main game, Switch 2 visual improvements and the Super Mario Mash-Up. Nintendo’s US listing gives Standard a $29.99 regular price, Deluxe $39.99 and Ultimate $49.99. Those are US reference prices, not verified Indian rupee prices.
Deluxe adds Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs and Plenty O’Blocks, along with Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins. Ultimate includes the Deluxe content plus Decocraft, Weapons + Tools, extra cosmetics and 1,000 Minecoins in total.
There is no need to buy Ultimate just to access Vibrant Visuals. The Standard version already includes the graphics mode and Mario content. Buy a higher tier only if those Marketplace extras interest you.
Can you move your old worlds to Switch 2?
Yes. Mojang says existing Nintendo Switch worlds can be carried over. That is especially important for players with several years invested in a survival base or creative project. Follow the official world migration steps and make a backup where possible before removing the original installation.
The Switch 2 edition still supports cross-platform Bedrock multiplayer. For online play, a Microsoft Account and the relevant Nintendo Switch Online membership are required. Local couch co-op is available, but Vibrant Visuals cannot remain active in split-screen.
Super Mario Mash-Up gets the visual upgrade
Nintendo’s exclusive Mario-themed Minecraft content is included across all three editions. The refreshed pack features familiar areas such as Peach’s Castle and Delfino Plaza, plus 15 music tracks and 40 character skins. It is a good bonus if you have never played the Mario world before.
The visual upgrade also applies to eligible Marketplace creations marked for Vibrant Visuals. You should not assume that every older texture pack or third-party world will look the same with the new renderer.
What should existing players do now?
First, sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns your Switch Minecraft purchase. Open the Switch 2 eShop and look for the upgrade entitlement. If you bought a cartridge rather than a digital copy, use Mojang’s in-game prompt to check your discounted option instead.
Second, transfer your saved worlds before making changes to the old game. Third, test Vibrant Visuals in a familiar area so you can see whether the new lighting suits your display and performance preference.
The January 31 deadline is the detail most likely to cost existing players money if they overlook it. This is a limited upgrade window, not a permanent promise that every Switch owner can claim a free copy forever.
