Minecraft's next game drop looks peaceful until the floor cracks beneath you. Mojang is testing Ice Caves, a cold underground biome packed with glowing crystals, hanging icicles and a new frozen zombie called the Frostbite. In the latest previews, builders also get snow bricks and another way to turn water into ice.

The important part is availability. These features are being tested in Java snapshots and Bedrock Preview or beta releases. They are not all part of the regular stable game yet. Mojang's October 28 Bedrock Preview 26.70.22 adds another batch of features while the final 2026 drop continues development.

What are Minecraft's new Ice Caves?

Ice Caves generate below colder Overworld biomes. Instead of the familiar stone walls and dripstone formations, they use packed ice, calcite, snow, glowing ice crystals and large icicles. There are also ore pockets among the cave walls, giving explorers a reason to venture inside beyond taking screenshots.

Some sections feature crevasses covered with brittle ice. That surface cracks when walked on and can break, dropping a player into the space below. An ordinary mining trip becomes more dangerous when the floor itself is unreliable.

You don't have to enter the biome to enjoy every addition, though. Several of the new blocks offer new possibilities for winter builds, underground bases and adventure maps.

Meet the Frostbite: Minecraft's new frozen zombie

Frostbite is a zombie variant associated with cold areas and the Ice Cave biome. It can fight up close or throw Ice Balls at players from a distance. Its melee attacks apply Freezing, which can slow a fight down at the worst possible moment.

According to Mojang's early testing notes, Frostbites can drop Ice Balls. These are throwable items and also feature in crafting and brewing mechanics related to freezing. The precise numbers and effects can change as snapshot balancing continues, so early preview statistics should not be treated as permanent.

The most interesting part isn't only the new enemy's damage. It changes how players approach a cave. A narrow passage, a fragile floor and an enemy throwing projectiles create a different problem from fighting a normal zombie on flat stone.

Snow bricks, frosted ice and the October 28 preview

Bedrock Preview 26.70.22, published October 28, introduces Snow Bricks and related building pieces, including walls, slabs and stairs. Mojang describes snow bricks as decorative blocks that do not melt; a shovel is the preferred tool.

The same preview adds a Cold archetype for Sulfur Cubes. Give a Sulfur Cube Blue Ice and it can turn water source blocks into Frosted Ice as it moves across them. It's a small mechanic with plenty of potential for experimental builds and player-made contraptions.

The preview also adjusts item placement and makes Ice Crystals available from Wandering Traders for two emeralds. These are test-build changes rather than a guarantee that every number will remain unchanged for the final release.

Brittle ice, jukebox playlists and other features

Another recent round of testing introduced Brittle Ice and jukebox playlists. Brittle Ice starts cracking when entities stand on it and eventually breaks. It can cover hidden crevasses, so a frozen floor no longer means safe ground.

Jukebox playlists let players put a chest containing music discs above a jukebox. Instead of manually replacing a disc every time, the jukebox can play through the selection. Builders creating themed worlds or social spaces may get as much use from that as they do from the new cave biome.

The Java snapshots and Bedrock previews do not always receive every feature on exactly the same day. Check the correct change log for your edition before assuming a mechanic is available in your test version.

How to try the Ice Caves update now

Java Edition players can use Minecraft Launcher to select a recent snapshot, then create a test world. Snapshot builds can introduce bugs and world changes, so make a backup rather than opening your only long-term survival save without protection.

On Bedrock, Minecraft Preview is offered on supported Windows, Xbox, PlayStation and iOS devices. Android testing runs through the Google Play beta route. Availability and enrolment instructions depend on the platform.

If you are using a beta or preview version, check the experimental game-drop settings where required. Mojang's official changelog is the right source for which experimental toggle or version you need.

When will the Minecraft Ice Caves update release?

Mojang has described Ice Caves and related winter features as part of its fourth game drop of 2026. As of October 29, the official testing notes do not give a final public release day for the complete stable update.

That matters because social media posts sometimes describe a preview feature as though every Minecraft player can use it immediately. Right now, the useful distinction is between what Mojang has shown and what is in a normal release.

There is already plenty to explore in testing, especially if you enjoy building with new blocks or surviving in unfamiliar terrain. Just keep the experiments in a separate world until the final update arrives.
