The strangest question in Netflix's November anime lineup is not about monsters or magic. It is whether somebody living in poverty might choose to stop being human so that other people can breathe. Fool Night, the new adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda's manga, starts streaming globally on Netflix on November 26, 2026, with all episodes scheduled to arrive together.
The series is the first production partnership between Sunrise and Shaft. Director Atsushi Yukawa is overseeing an adaptation that has more to do with economic desperation and bodily autonomy than a conventional end-of-the-world spectacle.
What is Fool Night about?
A century of thick cloud cover has robbed the Earth of sunlight. Most vegetation has died, leaving society with a dangerous oxygen shortage. Humanity's solution is a process called Transfloration: seeds are implanted into people near death, transforming them into plants that can supply oxygen. Survival has acquired an unusually literal price.
At the centre is Toshiro Kamiya, a young man who struggles to pay taxes, everyday expenses and the medication bills for his mother. His life is hard enough that becoming a plant appears less like a horrifying sentence and more like an escape. That decision leads him into the institutions and moral choices surrounding Transfloration.
This is not a story where the environmental premise exists only to give the protagonist an ability. It asks who gets to decide which human lives are expendable, how financial pressure changes a person's choices, and whether a society can claim to be surviving if survival requires its poorest members to disappear.
Who is making the anime?
Sunrise and Shaft are producing the animation. Sunrise is associated with large-scale science-fiction series, while Shaft has a recognisable history of expressive visual staging. Their pairing suits material in which mundane buildings, plants and quiet decisions can be as disturbing as a more obvious horror scene.
Atsushi Yukawa directs, with Jin Tanaka responsible for series composition, Robert Sato on character design and Tatsuya Kato composing the music. The anime adapts Yasuda's manga, serialised in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior. The production credits come from the anime's official site and Netflix's media centre.
Koki Uchiyama voices Toshiro Kamiya. Minako Kotobuki plays Yomiko Horai, a childhood friend of Toshiro who works within the Transfloration system. The confirmed voice cast also includes Junya Enoki, Aya Endo and Kiyomitsu Mizuuchi. Netflix lists the series as a Japanese science-fiction and seinen anime.
Is Fool Night coming to India?
Netflix and the anime's official Japanese website advertise a worldwide streaming release on November 26. That is the announced international date. Viewers in India should check the local Netflix listing for the final language options and exact release time, because a global date does not confirm that every dub or subtitle track will be available at the same moment.
The show's website says episodes will be released together rather than on a weekly schedule. That is useful for readers deciding whether to begin immediately or save the series for a weekend. There is no need to invent an episode count until Netflix or the production committee provides a final number.
Why the adaptation could be worth watching
Fool Night's concept works because it never lets the ecological crisis exist apart from ordinary labour. Toshiro still has bills. Someone still has to administer the process. The society that benefits from oxygen is also the society that creates incentives for people to give up their bodies. That tension could be far more unsettling than a chase sequence.
The visual challenge is equally specific. A story about slow transformation, silence and economic exhaustion needs time to show the weight of a decision. Yukawa has spoken about trying to preserve the passage of time in an adaptation, acknowledging that an audience cannot control the pace of animation in the same way that a manga reader controls a page.
A good Netflix release guide should therefore explain the premise without giving away later turns of the manga. The central dilemma is strong enough: if the air itself depends on human sacrifice, who gets to enjoy it?
Fool Night begins worldwide on November 26 on Netflix. Readers can find the official trailer, cast credits and premise on the series website, with the Netflix title page providing platform confirmation.
