Dune: Awakening Blood and Ice Is Free. The New Map Changes Survival

Funcom is taking players to Arrakis’s frozen north on December 1, with a new map, around 35 hours of progression, and a separate roadmap for offline play and cross-play.

The hottest place in Dune: Awakening is about to become the safest. Funcom's next expansion sends players away from Arrakis's desert and into its frozen north, where staying warm—not avoiding heat—is the immediate problem. Blood and Ice releases on December 1, 2026, and is free for players on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox.

The date matters, but so does what Funcom is trying to fix. Dune: Awakening began as a survival game organised around water, sandworms, weather and contested territory. Its forthcoming Polar Sink map changes the resources that players value and the decisions they make before leaving shelter. That is more interesting than a scenery swap.

What is included in Blood and Ice?

The Polar Sink has two main regions. Players first enter the tundra, where wealthy water-shipping families maintain guarded settlements. Beyond that lies the ice cap. Access to its resources is controlled, and breaking through the protection around those supplies becomes part of the adventure. New equipment is needed because technology built to survive desert heat cannot simply be carried into extreme cold unchanged.

Funcom estimates around 35 hours of new progression. The company also lists vehicle modules, augments and specialisation traits, as well as region-exclusive materials used to craft cold-weather gear. Ice harvested in the new area has a practical function elsewhere: it can cool equipment at your base and speed production. Returning to Polar Sink after completing the main activities may therefore have a purpose, although Funcom says additional return incentives are planned for later updates.

The expansion shifts attention back toward movement on foot, temperature management and fighting on the ground. That is a deliberate contrast with the game's more familiar desert exploration. How effectively the map supports repeat visits will only become clear after release; 35 hours is the developer's estimate, not a measured playthrough time.

A free expansion, but a new cosmetics store

Blood and Ice is not a paid map pack. Funcom is, however, introducing a cosmetics storefront with rotating outfits, vehicle variants and base customisation items. The company says optional purchases will support future free content. A future change is planned to make the entire cosmetics catalogue available instead of relying on rotating stock.

That combination deserves attention. Calling a large expansion free is appealing, but the sustainability question shifts to how aggressively a live-service game sells its appearance items. Funcom has not said that cosmetics will affect competitive strength. The question to watch is whether the game's best visual rewards remain earnable through play or increasingly sit behind purchases.

There are also more events on the way. A Water Crisis event will follow the expansion, and a new Events tab will gather objectives and rewards. A previous event, The Scourge, revolved around an illness spreading across Arrakis. Funcom is signalling that the world should change regularly instead of waiting for a large annual paid release.

Offline mode and cross-play have different dates

Players should not confuse the December expansion with the wider technical roadmap. Funcom says offline single-player is arriving in November 2026. Character copying—both from multiplayer to solo and from solo to approved private servers—is planned for January 2027. Full cross-play is also targeted for January 2027.

Those are scheduled features, not abilities already available on November 1. The publisher has not promised that every item or account state will transfer without restrictions; private servers will have to allow imported characters. The offline plan is especially important to players whose connection or preferred play times make permanent online dependence difficult.

For somebody in India deciding whether to return, the sensible approach is to check the base game's platform availability, server performance and existing account first. The December map itself costs nothing extra, but it does not erase the cost of buying the game or any existing progression requirements. Nor should players assume cross-platform friends can join each other before January's promised cross-play update.

What to watch on December 1

Three things will determine whether Blood and Ice lasts: whether the cold mechanics feel different in play, whether harvesting ice remains useful once players clear the new objectives, and how well the region fits an existing character's progression. Funcom has given the expansion time, geography and a useful economic purpose. Now the work is making that loop rewarding beyond its opening weekend.

The official update and full developer announcement are published on Dune: Awakening's site and in Funcom's press centre.
