Apple’s M6 MacBook Pro Costs ₹2.4 Lakh. The AI Pitch Needs More Than Benchmarks.

The new 14-inch laptop starts at ₹2,39,900 in India, with speed gains and longer battery claims. The real question is who benefits enough to replace a working Mac.

The expensive part of an Apple laptop is not always the price. It is the question you ask yourself afterward: did the work become easier, or did the same tasks simply finish a little sooner on a nicer machine?

Apple introduced the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on October 27, 2026. In India it starts at ₹2,39,900, or ₹2,27,900 with qualifying education savings. Preorders opened October 28, with customer availability scheduled for November 6. Apple describes faster graphics, stronger on-device AI processing, updated wireless connectivity and up to 24 hours of battery life. These are company claims at launch, not ByteMedia’s independent measurements.

The M6 model arrives at a moment when almost every major PC manufacturer is promoting AI as a reason to upgrade. For anyone who already owns a capable MacBook, the useful question is more specific. Which local task is now slow enough to justify spending nearly two-and-a-half lakh rupees?

The numbers are clear. Their meaning depends on your work

Apple says the M6 includes a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, with graphics up to 30% faster and selected AI workloads up to 25% faster compared with the M5 generation. Its launch material also compares the new machine against the much older M1, where the headline gains are naturally larger. Comparing a five-year-old computer with a new one can be legitimate. It is not the same as demonstrating a compelling upgrade for somebody who bought a Mac last year.

For a video editor, better export performance can be meaningful if it saves time across many jobs. For a developer, faster builds help when a project involves repeated compilation and testing. For a photographer working with enormous files, memory, storage performance and GPU acceleration may matter more than a benchmarked neural-network task. These are workflows worth measuring rather than abstract ideas about future productivity.

It is also important to recognise that the base 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro is not automatically the same product as every other MacBook Pro refresh announced around it. Apple has discussed a separate, more ambitious PROLED display development for another MacBook Pro line. Buyers should not assume a touchscreen, new panel technology or higher-end chip features are present in the base M6 merely because the launches happened close together.

The AI question is really a software question

Apple highlights additional GPU neural acceleration, a dual 16-core Neural Engine and better performance for local machine-learning tasks. Running a model locally can have advantages: reduced dependence on remote services for some workloads, lower latency for small jobs and greater control over what leaves the device. It can also bring constraints around model size, available memory and battery consumption.

A useful buying test starts with an application, not with a percentage. Can the software you already use run its desired model on the M6? Does it run locally or call an online service? Is the feature included in your existing subscription? Does the workflow require enough memory that a base configuration will hit a wall before the processor does?

Apple Intelligence features are not a substitute for checking those answers. Some tasks are ordinary operating-system conveniences; others require models too large to run comfortably in a small local environment. The launch performance figures do not tell us how every third-party model will behave on each configuration. Independent testing on real editing, coding and AI tasks remains essential.

A good laptop can still be an expensive decision

The machine includes Apple’s Liquid Retina XDR display, a 12MP Center Stage camera, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Apple promises battery life of up to 24 hours under its tests. That number should be read as a vendor-rated ceiling, not a guarantee during continuous 4K rendering, long video calls or a development build that keeps the CPU busy.

Ports remain a practical question for buyers using displays, external SSDs, audio interfaces and capture hardware. A laptop can be fast enough and still create avoidable costs if the setup depends on docks and adapters. Apple’s own product imagery shows the array of connections, which is a better starting point than assuming every accessory in a studio will work the same way it did on a different computer.

For an Indian student, the ₹12,000 education discount reduces the starting cost but does not turn this into a budget machine. For a creator earning money from deadlines, the purchase might make sense if saved hours translate directly into income. Someone doing writing, browsing and lighter media edits on a recent Mac may find little reason to rush.

Buy the workload, not the keynote

There are also questions worth answering after November 6, when independent reviews can test the hardware. Does the laptop sustain its advertised performance under lengthy loads? How hot and loud does it become? Which memory and storage combinations offer the best value? Are the AI workloads used in marketing representative of tasks people actually run?

None of those questions diminish the engineering achievement. A faster, more efficient computer is useful. But a ₹2,39,900 decision deserves more than a set of best-case graphs. The buyer needs to understand what the machine can do today, whether the required software exists and how much of the improvement will be visible in a normal week.

The M6 MacBook Pro will almost certainly be a better computer than many older machines. The harder question is whether it will be a better purchase than continuing to use the one you already own.
